X3: Hakone/箱根 (italiano/English/日本語)

Primo Torii del tempio di Hakone

ITALIANO

Owakudani

ENGLISH

Practicing English by writing about Hakone, Japan.

Summer of last year I visited Hakone, in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Before my trip, I bought the Hakone Free Pass, which allows unlimited rides on Hakone transportation. That is the Hakone Tozan railway, cable car, buses, ropeway and the Hakone Pirate Ship.

I took the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Odawara and then the Tozan Line to Hakone Yumoto, a well connected centre where I had booked a hotel for my stay.

From Yumoto, I got to Owakudani by riding the cable car and the ropeway. Owakudani is a very old explosion crater that still emits smoke and gas. From there, I took again the ropeway bound for Lake Ashi. The lake, surrounded by nature, is a great spot for sightseeing in Hakone. The path around Ashi offers stunning landscape and views, which I could not capture because my battery died. I arrived at Motohakone and took the pirate ship, a very popular ride because of the views of Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy and I couldn't see Mount Fuji, but I enjoyed a quaint view of the first torii gate of Hakone Shrine.

The next day, the weather was bad again, so I went hiking near Yumoto. I walked the Yuzakaji course from Ashinoyu to Yumoto. It is part of the old road to Kamakura, it passes several historical sites and, by a small detour, the peaceful Chisuji falls. It is a long walk, which I suggest to do in the direction I chose and not starting from Yumoto, which would be mostly uphill.

Evangelion Unit 01 at Togendai Station

Being a fan of the Evangelion franchise, of course I knew Hakone is New Tokyo-3 city. For all the other fans out there, there are several places you may want to visit, such as the Evangelion shop in Yumoto and the Evangelion Unit-01 display area at Togendai Station.

Please scroll down for a short video about my visit to Hakone.
